Gathering Hymn          “Shine, Jesus, Shine”       TFWS #2173

Call to Worship                                                 Isaiah 60:1-6

Leader:  Arise, shine; for your light has come,
    and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.

People:  For darkness shall cover the earth,
    and thick darkness the peoples;
but the Lord will arise upon you,
    and his glory will appear over you.

Leader:  Nations shall come to your light,
    and kings to the brightness of your dawn.

People:  Lift up your eyes and look around;
    they all gather together, they come to you;

Leader:   your sons shall come from far away,
    and your daughters shall be carried

                   on their nurses’ arms.

People:  Then you shall see and be radiant;
    your heart shall thrill and rejoice,
because the abundance of the sea

                   shall be brought to you,
    the wealth of the nations shall come to you.

Leader:   A multitude of camels shall cover you,
    the young camels of Midian and Ephah;
    all those from Sheba shall come.

All:        They shall bring gold and frankincense,
    and shall proclaim the praise of the Lord.

WE TALK TO GOD THROUGH PRAYER

Praises, Joys and Concerns

Pastoral Prayer and Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth,
as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,

the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

 Sacrament of Holy Communion

Prayer of Confession (unison)

Leader:   Lord, you have asked us to feed and give drink to those who hunger, to clothe those who are naked, to welcome the stranger, to visit those who are sick and imprisoned. When we look back on this year we might be able to say we did some of those things.

People:  We remember the enthusiasm with which we last  year, ready to do your work and witness to your love. But you know how things got in our way.

Leader:   We allowed ourselves to be swallowed up by worries and fear. We placed comfort of self before service to others. We took the "easy way out" whenever we could. And you wept for us.

People:  Now we enter a new year. We cannot change what we did not do.

Leader:   But today we can make a covenant with you to be your witnesses in our words, thoughts and deeds to your people so that when you say, "Have you given food and drink to those who hunger and thirst, have you clothed the naked, welcomed the stranger, visited the sick and imprisoned?"

All:        We can respond with a joyful "Yes! Lord, we have done these things with joy and love!" Forgive us what we have not done. Inspire us to do what you would have us do. In Jesus' Name, we pray. Amen.

Words of Assurance

Leader:   God is making all things new. The past is over and done. It taught us many lessons. But God is the God of the future, new opportunities, new hopes, new dreams, renewed vision. God dwells with us to be our God. We are not alone. Thanks be to God. Amen.

Great Thanksgiving

Pastor:    The home of God is among mortals.

People:  We are glad God is here.

Pastor:    Let us give God thanks and praise.

People:  We are thankful for our lives, and praise God for blessings toward us.

Pastor:    We are grateful to you, O God, Creator of the new heaven and new earth, and of gifts yet to come, more than we can even imagine.

People:  You, O God, make all things new.

Pastor:    You dwell among us and call us to be your people. You dry the tears from our eyes. You take away the power of death. You bring us through mourning and crying and pain to be with you.

People:  You, O God, make all things new.

Pastor:    In a surprising gesture, you came in human form to dwell among us. Through Jesus Christ, you turned the world upside down-healing our diseases, teaching us new ways of thinking, living with us into new ways of community,
overcoming sin and death to rise again in newness of life. We remember his life, death and resurrection with thanksgiving.

People:  You, O God, make all things new.

Pastor:    Come now, with your Holy Spirit, and make us anew.
Release us from our old burdens of hate and sorrow. Free us from our doubts and fears. Transform us into your people, full of love and joy, ready to do justice and dwell with you.

People:  You, O God, make all things new.

Pastor:    By your Spirit, bless these elements and use them in your transformation of us, that Christ may indeed dwell in us and we in You, Great God, Three-in-One.

People:  Amen.
