Prelude

(Please take this time during the prelude to quiet your hearts before God
and peacefully anticipate the movement of the Holy Spirit.)

*GATHERING HYMN “Joy to the World” #246

OPENING WORDS

LIGHTING OF CHRIST CANDLE

Leader: As we find ourselves wrapped in the season of wonder and light, the astonishment that is life ignites our spirits, and we feel, if merely for a moment, that we are as we were meant to be.
People: May we hold fast to this sliver of mystery, this truth upon which we set the whole of who we are.
Leader: May we call ourselves back to it time and again,until we are filled with the wonder that is our life—its hope, its peace, its joy, its love. Infused, then, with all that we are, may our energies be given to the transformation of this world—
from despair into hope; from darkness into light; from fear into love.
May we be bold. May we be daring. May we be love.

People: Love light the world this Christmas.

THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION

INVITATION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Gracious God, forgive us when the Christmas story becomes so familiar that it loses its power. Instill in us a willingness to listen for your still small voice, which alters our plans, calms our fears and challenges us to step out in faith, believing the unbelievable. Like Joseph, let us make room in our lives for Emmanuel - God with us. Amen.
(moment of silent confession)

WORDS OF ASSURANCE
Leader: In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.
All: Thanks be to God. Amen!

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING
Pastor: Loving God, at this blessed Christmas feast we give you thanks and praise…so we join with them and with all people to praise your name:
People: Holy Lord, God of endless love, heaven and earth are surely full of your glory. The angels sang of it, the shepherds encountered it, we have been blessed with it. Blessed is he who is born this night. Glory to God and on earth peace to all people.
Pastor: As you, O God, shared your love and yourself with us in the person of Jesus so he…and awaiting with expectation the coming of his kingdom. Amen.

Let us greet one another in the name of the Newborn King!

Blessings of peace and joy to each of you on this most glorious of holy nights! A special welcome to all our visitors this evening.

“Silent Night, Holy Night”

Silent night, holy night,
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin mother and Child.
Holy Infant, so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace,
Sleep in heavenly peace.
Silent night, holy night,
Shepherds quake at the sight;
Glories stream from heaven afar,
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia!
Christ the Savior is born,
Christ the Savior is born!
Silent night, holy night,
Son of God, love’s pure light;
Radiant beams from thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth,
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.
Silent night, holy night
Wondrous star, lend thy light;
With the angels let us sing,
Alleluia to our King;
Christ the Savior is born,
Christ the Savior is born!
