Reflections from Ray  ~  April  2014

“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in Me through
Their message.” ~ John 17:20

I have counseled people who have been troubled with perfectionism. They tend to have an “all or nothing” outlook on life. Everything is white or jet black. If they don’t achieve perfection, they consider themselves total failures. This keeps them on an emotional roller coaster. I’ve often thought Simon Peter had a touch of this. On the Mount of Transfiguration, he wanted to just stay there forever. At the Last Supper, Peter says to Jesus, “Lord, you’re not going to wash my feet.” But when Jesus rebuked him, then he said, “O K, Lord. Wash not only my feet, but my hands and head.” He swung from “not even my feet!” to “Give me a bath!”

In those last hours, Jesus said that somebody was going to betray Him. Peter declared, “Lord, though everybody else in the whole world would deny You, I’ll die for You!” But within a few hours, in response to a maid’s questioning, Peter responded, “Who ? Jesus ? Why, I’ve never even heard of the man. Who’s He ?”

Aren’t you glad that Jesus Himself said to somebody like Peter, “Simon, Simon, behold Satan has desired to have you that might sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail, and when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.” (Luke 22: 31 – 32)
