                      Invasion Of The Pew Snatchers

My heart pounded, my knees wobbled, and I broke into a cold sweat that Sunday morning when I walked into the sanctuary. SOMEONE WAS SITTING IN MY PEW!! ! Okay, it wasn't REALLY my pew. I hadn't paid for it or anything and it didn't have my nameplate on it. But everyone KNEW it was my pew. I always sat there °left side, third row from the back.

The Phillips family, I noticed had their pew -- right side, five from the back. I'd never think of snatching their pew. Not again, anyway. The one time I did the entire troop sidled in behind me when the congregation stood to pray, and I had to move.
I could see Mr. Carter had his spot" too - right side, four from the front, aisle seat. One time an usher asked him to scoot down to leave room for latecomers. As smoothly as a dueler, he drew out his wallet and produced three photos: his father sitting in that seat, his grandfather sitting in that seat, and his great-grandfather sitting in that seat. He was about as ready to abdicate as Henry VIII.
Staking out a family pew can take months or even years for an exceptional pew. Exceptional pews have two characteristics. One is location. If you happen to select a pew beneath a heating duct, you could find yourself breaking out into a sweat even when the pastor isn't preaching on tithing. Air-conditioning vents are no better. Wearing your choir robe for the duration of the service is guaranteed to draw attention to you.

(continued on page 2)

. . . I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed ---we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal. . . I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain be made low, the rough places shall be made plain, and the crooked places shall be made straight and the glory of the Lord will be revealed and all flesh shall see it together.
