Reflections from Ray ~ December  2013

Victor Frankl in his book Manís Search for Meaning, tells a story that shows us how God shows up in the strangest places and in most unexpected ways. You see, Frankl was a prisoner in a Nazi concentration camp during World War II. He told how he along with some other prisoners were moved on a work detail from Auschwitz to a Bavarian work camp. He writes: ďOne evening when we were already resting on the floor of our hut, dead tired, soup bowls in hand, a fellow prisoner rushed in and asked us to run out to the assembly grounds and see the wonderful sunset. Standing outside we saw sinister clouds glowing in the west and the whole sky alive with clouds of ever-changing shapes and colors, from steel blue to blood red. The desolate gray mud huts provided a sharp contrast, while the puddles on the muddy ground reflected the glowing sky. Then after minutes of moving silence, one prisoner said to another, ĎHow beautiful the world could be!íĒ

The message of the prophet Micah is one about Godís actions in the midst of gloom and despair. Micah seeks to remind the people that although judgment is imminent, that God will bring forth a hope that will bring Godís peace not only to Judah but to the world. Micah makes it clear in his prophecy that this new ruler will come from the smallest of places, Bethlehem. The emphasis here is on what God can do with the smallest or least likely. What is unlikely becomes the tool of Godís blessing of hope. It shows us what God can do with very little. As we wait and watch and prepare during Advent, we need to remember that God will be at work in the places and through the people that we least seem to expect.  This message needs to be part of what we share as we prepare to celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ and anticipate His Second Coming in glory.
