UMC Cooperative Ministry Meeting

January 7, 2017

Attendance:  Jim and Donna Parkinson (First); Barb Gaither (First); Jim Reim (First); Margaret Harrison (Henderson); Mary  (Henderson); Harold Blair (Kingsley); Nels Sandberg (Kingsley); Dale Davison (Kingsley) Matt Judd (Glenwood); Bruce Davis (Asbury); Randy Dehn (Asbury); Jeff Boss (Asbury); Don Hullenbaugh (Simpson-Cascade); Margueritta Estes (Lakewood)

Meeting opened with prayer at 9:00am

OLD BUSINESS:

·        Connellsville flood trip was a successful collaboration between First and Glenwood.  We are looking to do another one in April/May. Donna Parkinson will coordinate the effort.

·        The pulpit exchange on November 20 was well received by pastors and churches alike.  We will do it again next year but will try to move it to mid-October (at least away from Thanksgiving weekend).  Pastors will decide date.

·        New Year’s Eve event (dinner, worship, games) went well – about 45-50 in attendance.  There is interest among the churches for more events like this one.  Game nights or pick-up kickball game in the summer were floated as ideas as well as a retreat and UM night at the Seawolves (Randy to get details)

·        Matt spoke about the cooperative youth/teenager program with Erie Youth For Christ at Glenwood.  Youth and adult leaders are invited to participate

·        Harold spoke/explained the Kids Café at Kingsley – school days from 3:30-5:30pm.  Recruiting more adult helpers is always a critical need.

·        Jim Reim noted that the “Take Me to Worship” campaign has been renewed for August 2017 (save your signs!)

NEW BUSINESS

·        We were reminded about the 4 weeks the UMC is helping at the homeless overflow shelter (January 4-17 and March 15-28).  Matt will forward the Detars information. Individuals can also sign up, even if their church is not taking a night.  Matt will get the schedule from Gail and Chris Detar.

·        Don shared about the launch of the Celebrate Recovery program at Simpson-Cascade (Sunday nights from 6:30-8:30).  It is a Christ-based recovery model and SC is partnering with The Cross Church to provide worship.  Information was provided and should be distributed freely.  Those who might be interested in serving should contact Don.

·        We revisited 2 ideas about providing summer camp scholarships for Wesley Woods:

o       Campership dinner Saturday, February 11 at Asbury.  Bruce and Matt to coordinate efforts.  Everyone is asked to publicize as we have access to many city children who would benefit from attending camp but cannot afford it.

o        Soup sale – Donna Parkinson presented a rough outline of ideas and ordering/deadline information will be sent directly to each church.  Help will be needed in preparing the soup and an individual coordinator at each church to keep things organized is encouraged.

·        Ash Wednesday worship was noted – pastors will handle that conversation/decisions among themselves

·        Matt presented an idea of a church-wide screening of the movie “The Shack”.  There was not much interest in trying to organize something like this right now.

·        Nels and Jim R. noted that the West Bayfront neighborhood just received a sizeable grant for community improvements. Nels asked what energy did the churches want to put into Erie’s comprehensive plan or the Erie 2040 plan as stakeholders in our city.  There is confusion in the overlap of leadership/responsibilities/implementation teams for these efforts so Jim Reim will do some digging to find out who we should talk to about our role.

CHURCH ACTIVITIES

·        Lakewood UMC Bible Study – Monday, January 22 “Who is this Man”?

·        Trinity UMC – Men’s Bible study – Thursdays at 9:00am

·        Glenwood UMC – Haiti mission team (exploratory trip on partnerships) – March 25-April 1

Next meeting is Saturday, March 11, 2017 (9-11am at TBD)

Respectfully submitted - Matt Judd
